Australia’s Next Townhouse Hotspots

New approval data shows where Australia’s next townhouse spots are likely to be.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show that the Melbourne West region received more building approvals for townhouses than any other location – 2,196 in the 12 months to April 2026.

Melbourne regions take out the top three spots for townhouse approvals, although Brisbane and Adelaide are rising up the ranks.

The Logan Beaudesert region came in fourth on the list with a 147% increase bringing its townhouse approvals to 1254 during the past 12 months.

Adelaide West was in fifth place with 1142 approvals – a 50% increase – while Sydney’s first entry was seventh on the list, with the South West region recording 1052 townhouse approvals.

Regional cities were also growing in popularity for townhouses with the Hunter Valley, the Gold Coast and Illawarra in the top 20 locations.

Many State Governments have been changing zoning restrictions to allow townhouses which has resulted in an increase in approvals.
